Mechanical Engineer / USA

Capable of leading the design of a large, custom, automatic assembly machine project from concept to acceptance.

Responsible for mechanical design activities including the direction of engineers assigned to the team. Is the direct interface with the Project Manager (PM), and is capable of communicating directly with the customer. Has decision-making responsibility for issues related to the concept, design, detail, fabrication, selection of purchased components, assembly, debug, and qualification of the machine.  Responsible for reviewing the concept, budget, and schedule to determine feasibility; then stays within the project milestone requirements. Ratio of design to project coordination: 50/50.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Design/Drafting

  • Designs concepts, layouts, assemblies, schematics, and bills of materials to be used in producing custom machinery
  • Reviews work from staff assigned to project
  • Audits schedule, budget, and resource performance
  • Maintains a profitable project, delivered on time
  • Frequently meets with and advises status to ME Manager
  • Extensive knowledge of electromechanical relationships, strong knowledge of machine timing and cycle time issues
  • Advanced knowledge of cams and servos
  • Advanced knowledge of pneumatics, actuators, slides, and automation components
  • Advanced knowledge of synchronous and non-synchronous machines
  • Working knowledge of machine shop practices
  • Audits engineering work for accuracy and completeness

  • Assembles component release packages according to Cox procedures
  • Identifies commercially available components, evaluates quality, and analyzes price and availability with regard to budget and schedule
  • Writes specifications and acceptance criteria for outsourced engineering work
  • Good computer skills (spreadsheet and word processing)
  • Keeps detailed records of the project
  • Is detail oriented; maintains attention to details
  • Follows ISO and the TQM process
  • Recommends continuous improvement methods that will impact quality, schedule, and budget

Problem Solving and Decision Making

  • Provides support during fabrication, assembly, debug, and qualification of the system
  • Strong decision-making ability and assumes responsibility for decisions
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Good knowledge of machine qualification methods; knowledge of SPC a plus
  • Evaluates and approves concepts
  • Reviews designs for functionality and longevity
  • Works toward simple (vs complex) solutions

Skills, Knowledge and Education
B.S. degree in Mechanical or Engineering Technology, or, with lesser education, demonstrates a very high level of automation experience

Experience/Technical Knowledge

  • Some prior experience in machining and machine building is required
  • Fluent in the use of 2D AutoCAD and 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, Pro-E)
  • Three years minimum as a Senior Project Engineer III, or equivalent, in the automation field
  • Nine years minimum in custom automation machine design, debug, and qualification, including lead position for complex projects
